Cycle crash highlights safety issues Kate Russell An accident on the St Vincent St Cycleway last week has highlighted the need to make parts of it safer, with nearby businesses saying it will only be a matter of time before there is another crash. A cyclist was injured at the Parere St section of the cycleway on Thursday morning, after failing to give way to oncoming traffic while crossing the road. Although there is a give way sign and line markings for cyclists at the intersection, there is still confusion over whether cyclists or drivers have priority at the black spot, and nearby businesses say they are witnessing “near misses” on a daily basis. Workers at Rockgas and Osprey Boats say that Thursday’s accident was a “classic example” of a cyclist not giving way at the intersection, and would like to see more signage or crossing bars put

in place. Matt Elliott, of Osprey Boats, who is a cyclist and a motorist, says it’s not a case of cars verses bikes, and that cyclists are not giving way because the signs are too small and not at eye level. “I’ve had a couple of close misses on my bike and in my car,” he says. “I think if someone spent a whole day watching the cyclists, they would be amazed. The policeman who was at the accident even commented how bad it was.” Sharron Sendall from Rockgas says the worst time is in the afternoon when children

Record numbers compete in trolley derby Jessie Johnston Thrills, spills and friendly rivalry made for a successful day at the Mike Pero Trolley Derby on Saturday. A record 92 trolleys entered into this year’s event which, as usual, took place on Nelson’s Collingwood St, showcasing some top notch ingenuity by locals both young and adult. Racing incorporated a number of sections, including the Zoomers’

class, comprising drivers from five to 10 years, followed by the Sprinters from 11 years and the Rockets from 16 years. While the corporate trolleys made a great spectacle, the main event was the Monarch of the Hill, which was taken out this year by Nitrofish, .co.nz driven by Jack Lovell who reached a speed of 70.8 kmph. Zoomers section, Hyper Drive driven by Jasmine Dacombe won the Sprinters class, Steve Lovell and Kiwiana won the Rockets section and major sponsor Mike Pero was the champion of the corporates. As well as being a popular day out for drivers and spectators, the Mike Pero Trolley Derby also helped raise vital funds for local charitable group Big Brothers, Big Sisters, who require volunteers and funds to mentor young people within schools and the community.

“I use the cycleway quite a lot and haven’t had any near misses, but I’m quite vigilant.”

“When I drive down to the shops on St Vincent St, I have to make sure I’m really cautious of cyclists.”

“I think Nelson needs as many cycleways as possible. It’s just about educating people to use them properly.”

“I think the cycleway is a good idea, but there needs to be some improvements to make it safer for everyone.”

are biking home from school. “They just don’t give way,” she says. “I don’t want to see a young kid hit, some of them are so tiny and often cycle in front of their parents.” Several other St Vincent St businesses who were spoken to by Nelson Weekly also expressed frustration that their premises can only be accessed “over the cycleway,” and say that the parallel car parks on the edge of the cycleway make it difficult for their customers to see cyclists when pulling out of their businesses. Robert Vandenburg, of Mean Greens Fruit and Vege, says he has lost plenty of customers because of the cycleway, especially elderly shoppers, because “they don’t want to take the risk”. “The concept is good, but there

Photo: Kate Russell. needs to be more awareness,” he says. The cycleway is also concerning organisations towards Victory Square, with YMCA executive director Gary Cox saying he has “struggled with the cycleway since its inception”. He says he raised his concerns with both Nelson City Council and NZTA, but has had little or

no response from either. “We have had a number of near misses with both adults and young children because of the visibility issues,” he says. “I don’t think this is fair on our kids, families or community, as it places our most vulnerable children at risk and I believe that there will be a serious accident

in St Vincent St as a result of the road design and its usage.” Nelson City Council’s Alec Louverdis says they have no plans to change anything at the Parere St intersection, as they have “no recorded crashes” at the location. He encourages people to use the council’s ‘cycle crash hotline’ to report near misses or crashes. Nelson City councillor Matt Lawrey, who uses the cycleway every day, says that despite Thursday’s accident, the cycleway enables a lot of people who are not confident on a bike to get into cycling and to get safely to and from work and school. “That’s a very valuable thing and I’d still really encourage people to use the cycleway. The impression I get from both cyclists and motorists is that people are getting used to it.” NCC’s “crash hotline” is 0800 CYCLE CRASH (0800 292 532).

HOUSE FOR SALE: The house on Main Rd Stoke, far left, which Nelson City Council are in negotiations to buy from the Nelson Anglican Diocese. Photo: Brittany Spencer. we had a special meeting last Thursday and the motion passed really, really well. So everyone is really positive about it.” He says the deal still has two big steps to go through however, as the land is actually owned by the Nelson Anglican Diocese, not the church itself. The trust board that controls all of the land owned by the diocese needs to approve the sale. If the sale goes ahead, it would give the council more space for possible car parking or a reshuffle of the tennis courts, as the lack of car parking has

been identified as an issue during the consent process of the proposed Stoke Community Centre. But those opposing the cost of the centre, including members of the Nelson Residents Association, say the land deal just adds to the escalating costs of the centre, which started out at $5.6 million but is now budgeted for $6.14 million. Consent for the centre was granted last month, despite some restrictions around the number of people who can use it on a Saturday due to a lack of car parks.

Andrew Board Car parking concerns surrounding the proposed Stoke Community Centre could be eased if a deal to buy land from the neighbouring St Barnabas Church goes ahead. St Barnabas vicar Philip Greenwood confirmed to Nelson Weekly that the church has been in negotiations with Nelson City Council to sell a house owned by the Nelson Anglican Diocese and managed by St Barnabas. The house sits between the church and the Stoke tennis courts on Main Rd Stoke. It is understood the price for the house and land is between $300,000 to $400,000, but this has not been confirmed and the council refused to discuss the deal. “We aren’t available to comment as this matter is in ‘public excluded,’’” read a statement from the council. Councillors approached for comment also said they could not speak about the proposed purchase. Philip says negotiations have been ongoing for more than a year. “It’s been a long process, but

Finally, a cracker day for Snapper Classic Jessie Johnston While some may have had trouble getting the fish to bite, others struggled to keep their boat above water during this year’s Tasman Bay Snapper Classic. The competition kicked off early on Saturday morning but for Daz Hunter, Roger Colville, Tim Colville and Hanz Walzl, fishing was temporarily delayed after their boat, Break Free, lived up to its name in the most inconvenient way. “We were down at the ramp at 3:45am and had already put the boat in the night before,” says skipper Roger. “We started the motor up on the marina berth and it was running and I had a wee problem with the tilt, I went down the back, lifted the motor cover and could hear water gushing inside. I got a torch, had a look and the exhaust had broken off and there was a four inch hole in the boat.” By the time they had dashed back to get the trailer, which was locked in the compound, the eight metrelong vessel was just two minutes away from sinking. “We took it out of the water at about 4am and my son’s a welder,

so he took it down to his workshop, welded it up and we were out on the water about an hour and a half later,” says Roger. “We were really, really lucky. If it had broken out there, the bilge pump wouldn’t have kept up and we would have been in the water in our life jackets,” In the end, the team caught every other species apart from snapper but say the trip was still a “brilliant day out”. This year the fishing competition saw 240 entrants take part, Geoff Caradus winning the heaviest snapper title with a monster weighing in at 11.22kg, while Jeff Holden took home the $14,000 DNA Boat and Honda Marine 4 Stroke outboard with Simrad Electronics for hooking the exact average weight snapper, at 2.07kg. This year the competition chose to support Coastguard Nelson and, while the total amount raised isn’t yet known, the fish auction raised over $1500 for the organisation, the top price paid being $140 for the 11.22kg snapper. The winners of the nelsonlive.co.nz photo competition were Jacques Le Grange, Tim Hemelryk and Dan Govier.

New citizens for Nelson The region’s newest citizens will officially be able to call themselves New Zealanders from tomorrow. Nelson City Council is hosting a citizenship ceremony in the council chambers from 9.30am. Gala raises $24k for school development Brittany Spencer Plates were smashed, art was auctioned, prizes were won, kids were covered in sudsy water and a lot of food was eaten at the Tahunanui School Gala last weekend. Just under 2000 people turned up for the school’s annual fundraiser gala on Sunday Owen Buckley, who proudly pronounces he is five and three quarters, couldn’t stay off the go-karts. “My go kart was yellow and the

number was three, I went so fast I crashed a little bit, but not that much,” he said. Mother Michelle Redward has brought her family to the gala ever since her daughter Madison first began Tahuanui School, seven years ago. “It’s such a great school, the gala gets bigger and better each year with more activities and different food, and the kids just love it.” Principal Barbara Bowen says both the fundraising and the day itself were

a massive success. “It was my first gala and it was fantastic, heaps of people came, the sun was out, everything worked, there was something there for everyone and people were so generous.” Barbara says the $24,000 raised will go towards school development. “We’re doing a big whole school property development and the first stage of that will be building a massive climbing frame by the adventure playground, which we’re hoping to get started this year.”

Police: Hells Angels' ride 'well behaved' The annual Sun City Poker Run attracted some of the country’s most notorious motorbike gangs to Nelson over the weekend, but police say the ride itself was “relatively well behaved”. There was a heavy police presence throughout the ride, which started from the Belgrove Tavern and headed south to St Arnaud before going to Riwaka, via Tapawera and the Motueka Valley and ending back at Belgrove. There were two minor crashes that didn’t involve any other vehicles but did leave one patched Hells Angels member with a suspected broken arm. More than 50 bikes took part in the ride and the patches included Head Hunters, South-

Patched gang members at the start of the poker run. ern Vikings, Nomads and Hells Angels. The poker run was being hosted by feeder gang Prospects 81 Nelson. Officer in charge of the opera-

tion to watch the run, senior sergeant Dave Gibson, says there were no speed limit breaches. “All in all, it has been relatively well behaved. We are investigating the crash that left a rider with suspected head and arm injuries, and there was another incident where a bike went off the road after failing to negotiate a corner, but that was it,” he says. Earlier this week, police issued a statement saying the Hell Angels presence is not welcome in the region. “Gangs are the main driver of methamphetamine trade in this country and we do not want that here,” says Nelson Bays area commander Mat Arnold-Kelly.

Leaping down tower for charity St John Nelson will literally be leaping into their annual appeal later this month, giving locals the opportunity to abseil down the Nelson Fire Station tower. The event will involve plenty of adrenaline and courage, but for the opportunity to descend down the four-storey tower, they will need to raise a minimum of $500 for the ambulance service. St John Nelson area executive officer Sarah McCabe says they already have eight people on board for the abseil, which has been dubbed ‘Leap for Team Green.’

Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz “We can take up to 20 entries, so there are still plenty of spaces for people to take on the challenge,” she says. “Participants can either make a donation of $500 to St John, or raise the money through Givealittle or by personal fundraising to have the opportunity to abseil the tower.”

Locally Owned and Operated

One entrant, Tanya McMurtrie, has already raised $400 through her Givealittle page and says she is doing it not only to help St John, but to challenge herself, because she “doesn’t like heights.” St John Nelson area chair Keith Adams says that every day St John ambulance officers are called out to challenging emergency situations. “We decided that abseiling down the fire tower was a great way for people to challenge themselves and support St John,” he says.

“All funds raised from this event will help to provide essential equipment, medical supplies, ambulances and support for our ambulance officers. We need to raise $1000 every day to maintain ambulance services in the Nelson area.” The Leap for Team Green fundraising challenge is happening on Thursday 31 March. Anyone interested in signing up can contact Sarah McCabe at St John Nelson on (03) 546 9445 extension 2, or sarah.mccabe@stjohn. org.nz. The minimum age for participants is 16. Note: this will not be a public event.

Popular policeman changes jobs Simon Bloomberg

One of the region’s best known policemen may have left the force after 38 years but he will still be helping out people in the community, or at least older ones, in his new role with Age Concern. Mal Drummond retired from the police earlier this year, ending a lengthy career that started as a 19-year-old on the beat in Wellington in 1978. Although many people may have been surprised that Mal decided to leave the force, he says what's actually surprising is that he lasted that long. "When I left school, I didn't really know what I wanted to do although I had no real desire to become a policeman," Mal recalls. "But I had a friend who had joined the year before and he enjoyed it, so I thought I'd give that a go for a couple of years - I had no intention of making a career of it." But Mal soon changed his mind about policing, deciding to make it a life-long career after his first "eyeopening" posting in Wellington Central. "I was 19 when I graduated and it was

Mal Drummond and Sue Tilby outside the Age Concern office in Richmond last Wednesday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg a real eye-opener for someone from Richmond to suddenly be on Cuba St with all the night life and interesting people that were around at the time. I clearly remember (flamboyant drag queen) Carmen - she would come out of her strip club at two or three in the morning with her big hair and big boobs and say "come in, dear, and have a cup of tea and get warm". “We'd go in for a cup of tea right by the stage where all the transvestites and strippers were and then go back out again. She was a great person and it was a really cool time." Although all the new recruits had to do the hard yards

on the beat, Mal says it was character-building and enjoyable and ultimately made him a better policeman. "When I started, you were given a 12 inch piece of wood and handcuffs and that was it. You had to rely on your negotiation skills a lot of the time, but we still got into some pretty tight situations.” After six years in Wellington Central, Mal transferred to Blenheim and then to Wakefield, where he was based for nine years with Pete Carmody before moving into Richmond. Mal says working with Pete in Wakefield "was a real highlight because the whole community was fantastic and we got some good

results". But there have also been some low points, including being sent to the front line during the controversial Springbok tour in 1981 when he was involved in some "pretty scary" clashes with anti-tour protestors. When Mal transferred to Richmond, he became involved in community policing and youth aid which led to his appointment as family violence coordinator for Nelson Bays. It was the first time that position had been created, which Mal says reflected the changing attitudes towards domestic violence in the police and the wider community. After 38 years in the police, Mal says "the time was right to move on." He had "been looking around" for a new challenge and when the job came up at Age Concern he decided to apply. Age Concern manager Sue Tilby says Mal's background was "obviously one of the reasons" he was employed. She says Mal is very experienced and has "strong and respected relationships in the community", and is a real asset for their organisation.

Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards, Tuesday, March 8: After an article in the Nelson Weekly, the Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards is starting to see its first entries roll in. The awards were set up in order to thank local voluntary groups and recognise their contributions to the community. People have until 5pm on Friday, April 29, to get entries in for this year’s awards. Entry forms are available from Council offices or service centres, or they can be completed online at www.trustpower.co.nz/ communityawards. Entry forms can also be received by calling Emily Beaton on 0800 87 11 11. Jake Robinson fundraising concert, Tuesday, March 8: Jake Robinson and a number of other performing arts groups took to the stage on Saturday for Jake’s fundraising concert, ‘With a little help from my friends’. The show was organised by Jake in order to help raise some of the $50,000 he needs to get to London to join the Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ Young Shakespeare Company and study at the prestigious London School of Musical Theatre. The concert was supported by an audience of 77 people which, along with raffles, raised $1700. Ant plan needs community support, Tuesday, February, 23: Since this article was published in the Nelson Weekly, project coordinator Andrew Goldsworthy says they have had considerable interest in the project with Tahunanui Community centre being “overwhelmed” with calls. He and Kay are also working with Stoke School to see if they can treat their Argentine ant infestation. “Lots of people in Richmond and Nelson have complained about the problems these ants are now giving them, as they are spreading so fast,” he says. He also says, for the bait to be effective, it would need the support from both the councils and the community. In order to share their methodology and the recipe, they are making a short video and will be publishing the information on a website www.nelsonants.nz that they are currently creating.

NCC: City needs new cremator A new cremator is “urgently” needed to keep up with increased demand for private cremations at the council-owned Wakapuaka Cemetery. A list of recommendations was made public on Friday after a review of the council’s crematorium services by the community services committee. The recommendations include the council retaining ownership of the crematorium, urgently renewing the existing cremator and phasing out pet cremations. “The number of human cremations is increasing compared to burials in Nelson,” says a statement released by Nelson City Council today. “The committee believes the crematorium provides the community with a cost-effective alternative

to burial. It also means that families can privately plan a funeral and committal for a loved one.” The decision to “phase out” pet cremations was made because the service will be taken up by the private sector. That does mean that fees for human cremation will increase to cover the paint | wallpaper | curtains | blinds costs of running the facility, says the council. The committee has recommended that fees are raised over a three year period. The public have the opportunity to provide feedback on these recommendations, before a decision is made by the council. Feedback can be received via the website nelson.govt.nz search Crematorium Feedback, or through the customer service centre.

Cycle-way is 'rough': Does the Nelson City Council do any Quality Control of the new shared cycle-ways that it pays for? The new shared cycle-way leading on to Beatson Rd from the Waimea Rd roundabout is 'rough as guts'. It is unbelievably rough to ride on, especially considering that it is brand new. The work done is obviously very substandard, and definitely not what I'd expect from a professional company. Surely there is a minimum standard of work that our rates are paying for. I'd suggest that council employees cycle this route themselves so that they can experience what I am talking about. Harry Pearson. Councillors spending too much: Nelson council’s annual plan is open for submission. A performing arts centre is proposed for Trafalgar Centre; and also funding for a report on a second performing arts centre. As well, there is a $50,000 down payment on a Gondola. Councillors think there are no limits to the spending they are able to do in addition to the commitments already heaped on ratepayers. Council has lever-

aged itself hugely, using our homes as collateral, with projects outside of core spending and ensured that the next doubling of rates will not take nine years, but much less this time if the new annual plan is adopted. Dan McGuire. New flag: We did not get to vote for the flag of our choice, a committee decided which four flags we could vote on, and 50 per cent of those were by the same designer, another flag was simply added to the list later. What sort of country are we that puts the flag of another country on our flag, and that flag itself is flawed. Do you really think it is coincidence that the Union Jack is, or was, on nearly all of the Commonwealth countries. We deserve and have earned a new flag. George Shanks. During my recent visits to our provincial museum to see the exhibition related to World War One, it makes me feel ashamed that attempts are made to remove the flag which represents the thousands of New Zealanders who have lost their lives for our freedom. To remove the flag is not only an insult, but also a betrayal to those voiceless soldiers who have made Anzac Day our most historical day once a year. Changing the flag is also ignoring those historical settlers who formed this country as we know it today. Addo Mulders Sr.

The bad news is that it's the end of summer. The good news is that means it's time for the Sprig & Fern Harvest Fare to be held in Sundial Square in Richmond this Friday. The annual fare celebrates the autumn harvest and features some of the Sprig & Fern's finest beers and some of the region's top wines, all made from hops and grapes harvested in Tasman. Add some excellent music from the Dixie Prix and a feast of food stalls, and you have the recipe for a great night out. "It's always the last hurrah for summer and an opportunity to get out with friends and family and enjoy the evening," one of the organisers, Kim Quint of Richmond Unlimited, says. "There's always a really nice, relaxed atmosphere and I think that's why people

keep coming back." Friday night is the start of a big weekend for sponsors Sprig & Fern, which will have to back up for Marchfest at Founders on Saturday. Head brewer Tracy Banner says they have also been busy brewing the latest batch of their award-winning Harvest Pilsner made from fresh green hops harvested from

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: What happens to debt

when you separate? A: While there can be exceptions; the general rule is that after a relationship of 3 years or more, both assets and debts are split 50/50. A debt can be a relationship debt without both partners being aware of it. The Property (Relationships) Act defines relationship debts as:  Those incurred jointly (eg, a joint hire purchase).  Those incurred in the course of a common enterprise (eg, a business that benefits both parties).  Debts incurred to acquire, improve or maintain relationship property (eg, a loan to renovate a house).  Those incurred to manage the affairs of the household (eg, purchases of household items, holidays, car, etc)  Those incurred for the purpose of bringing up a child of the relationship.  In contrast, personal debts are those incurred to acquire or improve separate property or those incurred before the relationship began or after it ended. Even debt in one partner’s name can be relationship debt if it was incurred for the reason’s mentioned above. If you are separating from your partner it is important seek good legal advice. Nothing satisfies the soul more than fresh woodfired pizza with a cold glass of craft beer, which is exactly what Eddyline Brewery & Pizzeria have brought to Richmond. The opening of their new venture on Champion Rd has had locals’ mouths watering for months as the premises was set up, and for just over three weeks, owners Mic and Molley Heynekamp have been serving up a winning formula to their customers. While Mic’s passion for beer started as a home brewing hobby back at university, the pair has been commercially brewing since 1999 when they founded their first business, Socorro Springs Brewing Company in New Mexico. “We wanted a business that we could run in a small town where there’s an enjoyable lifestyle, I wanted a lifestyle, not a career,” says Mic. In 2009 Mic and Molley created Eddyline Brewery in Buena Vista, Colorado, the name originating from its close proximity to a popular white water rafting area where the business provided a resting place for rafters and kayakers. In the ten years between the creation of both businesses, Mic and Molley never took a vacation and decided they deserved a break, so with their three children in tow, they made the journey to New Zealand and “just loved the people and loved the culture.” “We decided we wanted our children to be able to grow up here and felt that it was a fit with our vision of Eddyline - just being a gathering place in an area with a real community and real adventures to be had,” says Mic.

The menu is 100 per cent gourmet comfort food, with a wood fired oven doing all the cooking and dishes such as pizza, calzone and lasagna gracing customer’s plates. Mic and Molley say they aren’t trying to be the next modern, funky restaurant, or a high end white table cloth establishment, their main priority is creating a welcoming, friendly atmosphere where people can spend time with friends and family. The pair has also incorporated that sense of comfort into the interior of their restaurant, with tables and the front of the bar all handmade from locally sourced wood, the smell of wood-fire pizzas wafting over diners and large windows into the micro-brewery reminding customers their beer was carefully brewed on site. While their selection of beers will include some of Eddyline’s core creations from the States, such as CrankYanker IPA, Kickin’ Back Amber and Jolly Roger Black Lager, the brewery has also created some products inspired by the Nelson Tasman region such as the Low Tide Pale Ale, Pozzy Pale Ale, Tahunanui Light Pilsner and Kaiteriteri Gold Pilsner. These beers are crafted from mainly New Zealand hops and New Zealand malts. The aim for Eddyline Brewery & Pizzeria is to have 10 beers on tap - five or six of them permanent brews that have proven to be favourites with their customers, while the remaining beers will be rotated so people can try out Mic and Molley’s new inventions. The same local inspiration has gone into their pizzas with several of them named after places

Come one, come all, step right up and enjoy a fun-filled day at Enner Glynn School’s Carnival extravaganza. With so many stalls, competitions and activities all crammed into one day, Sunday, March 20 is sure to offer non-stop entertainment for friends and family who attend the school's major fund-raising event. While proceeds from the carnival will go towards projects within the school, it’s also been decided that a donation will be made to the Nelson Hospital children’s ward. Organisers hope people will come along for a great day out and help them support the children’s ward, with funds to be spread across the upkeep of the fish tank, supplying new toys and adding to the treat box used for oncology patients. The carnival will get underway at 10am and will run until 2pm, so make sure you get there early in order to experience as much of the stalls, food and activities as possible. Make sure the kids have togs or a change of clothes for the waterslide, or let them get stuck into the carnival's newest addition, laser tag. There will be bouncy castles, carnival games, plenty of spot prizes, ride-ons and the best-dressed clown competition for both junior and senior students. On this occasion, 11 of the 20 layouts on show are appearing for the first time in Nelson, normally there are only 11 to 14 layouts for display. Building a model railway covers a number of skills such as woodworking, electrical and scenic modelling, and these days can also involve computer programming to run layouts automatically. The show suits all age groups and is open from 10am to 5pm both days.

In the 19th century being an orphan did not necessarily mean you had no parents. In 1872 the Roman Catholic Sisters of the Mission established an orphanage at Manuka Street in Nelson.

Twelve years later they had 79 girls and 99 boys in their care. Legal reasons for the designation of orphans included being destitute, vagrant, uncontrollable, living in a disreputable place or guilty of punishable offences.

Kids get an early taste of football Some of the region’s newest footballers are getting a taste of the sport before the season even begins. FC Nelson, one of the region’s largest football clubs, has been hosting a football in schools programme with one of its top coaches, Andy Morris. The programme sees Andy give those who may not have had the opportunity to play winter football, a taste of the sport during school lunch breaks. So far, around 40 students from Victory Primary School and Nelson Intermediate have taken part in the programme. Andy says the kids are selected by teachers and are those who may not have been exposed to winter football before. “The club looked at areas where we as a club weren’t seeing kids and decided to run the programme at Victory Primary School and Nelson Intermediate, as they are two schools that are in the FC Nelson catchment area.” The programme has been running for five weeks and will continue until the end of term one. Andy says the ultimate goal is to get more kids playing winter football for FC Nelson. “We know there are a lot of barriers for a lot of these kids, but we want to look at encouraging as many people to play football as possible and then see if we can get them

If there are difficulties, then what can we do to facilitate it happening. Really, we’re just trying to grow our player base.” He says the response to the programme has been fantastic with the schools asking if it can continue past term one, and he says the club should be able to make a whole new team with players from Victory school

alone. “It’s a great initiative, often we focus on the top end and forget about the grassroots, community level. This is where it all starts and you only have to look at the enthusiasm to realise that it’s all worthwhile.” Andy says funding for the programme was granted by KiwiSport and that it was too early to say if the programme would be extended.

Women’s tri still going strong after 29 years Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz Thousands of women have completed in the Nelson Women’s Triathlon over the past 28 years, but the one woman who has been at the centre of it all has never taken part in the fun. Not that Averil West minds, she says the stories and sense of accomplishment from the competitors is her fun. “Some of the stories that the women have told are pretty amazing, some have battled some pretty nasty illnesses and disease and this has been a little carrot at the end of the hard journey. It’s pretty tear-jerking stuff, there are some pretty tough women out there.” The McFadden McMeeken Phillips Lawyers Nelson Women’s Triathlon is preparing for its 29th edition next month, where an expected 250 women will run or walk, bike and swim their way to the finish line. Averil has been the key organiser every year, more recently along with her daughter Amanda, but says she has never been tempted to take part herself. “I tried competing in a half marathon that I was also organising once and I couldn’t

I was thinking as I was going down the road, ‘where’s that marshal who’s supposed to be there…’ I don’t switch well from being an organiser to a participant.” Despite never doing it herself, she says the women’s triathlon was started as way

to get more women competing in a more welcoming environment. “Women weren’t being catered for so we thought ‘let’s go for something that is women only, then they will be recognised and it will be their event, done for them, their way, as opposed to being plumped

into a male world, like women often are’.” A little over 100 took part at the first event in 1987, over the years entry numbers have reached as high as 500, with 250 the norm over recent years. Averil says its success is due to its focus on people taking part for the first time. “The whole idea is that anyone can take part. I don’t like to get into body shapes and sizes, but they’re all there but they are all a part of the event and they all have their own little journey that they’re going on. We’re just creating a venue for that to happen. “There’s nothing like seeing women – if it’s a real struggle for them – getting out of that pool… it’s really special.” This year a team’s section has been added, catering for teams of two or three to cover a leg each. There is also a young mums section for those who have given birth or adopted in the past 18 months. Averil says she has been organising the event for more than half of her life and believes there is still plenty of life left in it. “I don’t see a finish date yet. There is still good demand, so while women want to do it, we’ll keep running it.” The McFadden McMeeken Phillips Lawyers Nelson Women’s Triathlon is on April 3 from 8am. Hayden and John teamed up with Matt Newberry to win the event that required each team member to swim 250m, cycle 6km and run 2km before tagging a team-mate and sending them off on the next leg of the relay. Team Sitting on 99 finished in 1hr 28min 10sec with Hayden recording the fastest time of the day, finishing in 26min 33sec. Hayden heads to Gisborne for the Oceania Junior triathlon sprint champs this weekend while Jon is preparing for Xterra Rotorua on April 16. Wayne Leighton, who teamed-up with Mandy Medcalf-Stephens and PJ Stephens to finish sixth, is also heading to Rotorua for Xterra. A nationally-ranked swimmer, Thomas showed he also could be a pretty useful triathlete, record-

ing the day's second-fastest leg of 29min 24sec. Thomas made a big impression earlier in the week when he won the senior boys race at the secondary school's Andrew Jones Memorial Triathlon at Rabbit Island. Garin College's Olivia Wilbourne, Sophia Kersten and Hannah Price won the female section, while Carolyn Squance,

Peter Gibbs and Rob Rix won the senior section for teams with a combined age of 170-plus. At the other end of the demographic, Team RWCA's Nic Hall, Gianni Pessione and Oxford Bayley won the junior category. Thirty-one teams and 92 athletes competed in the event sponsored by Tineli and Kiwi Multisport.
